Le Grand Cormoran doit son nom à deux mots du vieux français. Le premier "Corp" (corbeau) et le second "Marenc" (mer), ce qui a donné "Comareng" au XIIe siècle, puis "Cormoran" à partir du XIIIe siècle. Le Grand Cormoran veut donc dire "le Grand corbeau marin".
