L'etat de l'Idaho fut nomme par George M. Willing au Congrès américain affirmant qu'il s'agissait d'un mot indien shoshones, signifiant « diamant des montagnes ». Au moment où la supercherie fur découverte, le nom d'« Idaho » était déjà en usage courant.
