En 1935, Marguerite Lebrun, se rend sans son mari Albert aux USA à bord du Normandie où elle est accueillie par Franklin Roosevelt et sa femme Eleanor. La presse américaine la salue du titre "French First Lady". L'expression "Première dame" s'imposera dès 1947 pour saluer Michelle Auriol.
